Commercial Design Process

Our commercial design process is built to serve visionary business owners, developers, and organizations. Whether you're designing a new space or refreshing an existing one, our proven framework helps ensure your project is on brand, on budget, and on schedule.

STEP ONE

PROGRAMMING & DISCOVERY

Every commercial project begins with understanding your business goals, brand identity, and the intended use of the space.

In this phase, we gather detailed information about your project — including how the space will be used, who will use it, and what outcomes you're aiming to achieve. We align on your project timeline, brand requirements, operational needs, and future growth considerations.

We’ll also collect your architectural plans in AutoCAD format. If plans aren’t available, our team will coordinate with a third-party vendor to conduct site measurements and create the necessary floor plans to move forward.

This is also when we collaborate on visual direction — if you have brand imagery, mood boards, or inspiration, we’ll review those. If not, we’ll provide a tailored visual presentation to establish the design tone and direction for your space.

STEP TWO

CONCEPTUAL DESIGN & SPACE PLANNING

Now we begin translating your business vision into an actionable design plan.

Our team develops initial space plan concepts — typically offering 2–3 layout options — that optimize flow, function, and brand expression. We’ll present visual inspiration, conceptual sketches, and layout diagrams to help you envision the transformation.

After reviewing with your team, we collect feedback, refine the plan, and finalize the layout. This version will be used to generate the builder bid set and initial scope of work, so your contractor can provide accurate pricing and timelines.

Optional: For projects that require added visualization, 3D modeling of key spaces is available upon request.

STEP THREE

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT & MATERIAL SELECTION

This is where your space begins to take shape — from finishes to fixtures to furniture.

With your layout finalized, we dive into the creative and technical development of the space. You’ll receive a curated presentation of materials including flooring, tile, wall finishes, lighting, paint colors, and cabinetry. We’ll also present suggestions for furniture, artwork, and brand-specific styling as needed.

In-person meetings are held either in our office or local showrooms to review samples, options, and make selections with clarity. Collaboration is key — your feedback ensures the end result reflects your business and values.

STEP FOUR

CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTATION & SPECIFICATIONS

We finalize all design drawings and specifications — giving your builder a crystal-clear roadmap.

This includes construction documents, reflected ceiling plans, finish schedules, tile layouts, millwork details, and more. We create a complete specification packet with product information, installation notes, and supplier details, helping your general contractor execute efficiently.

You’ll also receive detailed FF&E proposals (furniture, fixtures, and equipment) that align with your budget and brand.

STEP FIVE

PROCUREMENT, PROJECT ADMINISTRATION & INSTALLATION

With everything approved, we enter the implementation phase — guiding your project to the finish line.

Etch Design Group works closely with your builder and trades to maintain design integrity throughout construction. We remain actively involved, providing oversight, answering field questions, reviewing shop drawings, and helping solve issues that arise during installation.

Once construction is complete, we shift to furnishings, art, and accessories — curating and installing the final layers that bring your commercial environment to life.

THE FINISH LINE

CONSTRUCTION OBSERVATION & DESIGN SUPPORT

The vision becomes reality.

Throughout construction and install, we remain in direct communication with your project team. Our role is to advocate for the design, reduce friction between stakeholders, and ensure the finished space matches the approved vision.

We review submittals, verify site conditions, respond to field conditions, and consult on any design changes required. Our goal is to reduce stress, deliver clarity, and ensure your business receives a space that’s functional, beautiful, and on-brand.
