What Makes A Room Feel Like You?

SHARE

Ever looked around your home and felt that the space didn’t quite mesh well with your own personality? It’s a common problem in modern households. Even with the time and effort you’ve done to decorate, declutter, and make it your own, you just don’t quite feel like it really is.

And it might not be the whole house that’s a problem here. It could just be one or two rooms that leave you feeling that way. You live and work in them every single day, but if you admit it to yourself, they don’t feel all that much different from being in a hotel.

If that’s the kind of feeling you’re dealing with, the first thing is to understand the problem. And to do that, you’re going to need to answer the all important question:

What makes a room feel like you?

No matter who you ask, you’re probably going to get a bunch of different answers. But you’re also going to get a few common points as well. Those are the ones we’ve collected down below.

If you want to add a bit more you to the decor you surround yourself with, it’s these factors that might just be what you’re missing.

The Color Scheme Feels Inviting

What colors do you like most? And not just the kind of colors you think look good. We want to hear about the colors you’re really most drawn to, and would love to actually decorate with.

It’s why we see fewer green, yellow, and pink spaces than there really should be in the world. It’s also why a lot of people avoid black and dark greys. They don’t tend to have a good reputation for home decor.

And yet, if these are colors and tones you like, they should have a place in your rooms.

Making your floors and walls fit together

They need to complement one another, to really make a room feel like it works.

And even as we say that, it’s more than OK to get two totally contrasting tones and/or textures on the floor and wall. If you’re more of a maximalist person when it comes to decor, these are in fact complementary colors that make the space feel more you.

While painting can be easier to tackle as a DIY project, your flooring is another matter. Indeed, if you’ve got more than one room to refloor, make sure you contact a flooring company to help with the project.

Remember, if you’ve got a lot of different shaped spaces to put new carpet or lino onto, making the measurements fit can be difficult without a pro’s handiwork.

Clutter is a Necessity

When you think of possessions as clutter, you might be doing their importance quite the disservice.

After all, if you don’t see signs of yourself, your life, and your memories around you, does the room really feel like it’s yours?

When a room becomes a bit too bare, these important reminders of life, love, and personality become extinct. They need to be there, and simply to make sure you’re surrounded by things that are yours.

Is minimalism really for you?

Minimalism is a good style for decorating your home. And for a lot of people, it’s the best one of all.

It’s the kind of decor that gets you thinking about what’s really important, and whether or not those items should take up space in your life.

But make sure you consider the true meaning behind minimalism. Because if your home does feel like it’s too empty, this sense of minimalism might have been taken a bit too far.

It’s Not Annoying to Live in

No one loves a home that feels like it’s been made to frustrate you. If you’re always knocking things off, bumping into corners, snagging clothes on sharp bits and handles, etc., you’re not going to feel all at ease within the space.

After all, you just don’t feel welcome there. And you’re sick of having to patch up broken vases and shirts - as well as spilled drinks from where something has fallen off the too small shelf and onto the desk below.

Is Something Missing From Your Rooms?

That’s the big question, isn’t it? When you look around your home, you don’t quite feel like it’s really yours.

But at the same time, you’re not sure what’s missing - or even that anything really is. What can you do to evaluate this feeling, identify the potential gap, and finally try to fill it?

Here’s a quick checklist for you:

  • Have you decorated your rooms with colors that actually speak to you and feel good?
  • Do you feel like your spaces are too bare and don’t look like anyone really lives there?
  • Are you living with the kind of decor that means you can never find anything, or that even the slightest hint of mess shows up immediately?

If any of these problems exist within your rooms, something is missing.

And it might be simple enough to fix this, such as placing a few more plants around or simply putting a different patterned wallpaper on the wall behind your TV.

But it can also be more of a complex situation to work around. Take your time to think it through.

You Can Make Your Rooms Feel More Like You

It’s all about working out what’s missing right now, and then working those elements into the space to join it all up.

And if that means you need to completely repaint a room and buy a totally different sofa suite or bed and mattress, go ahead and do it. You’re not going to feel happy, or truly comfortable, living in your home otherwise.

Remember, you need to feel like you’re walking into a space that’s meant for you. It needs to be colored the right way, it needs to be functional according to your needs, and it’s OK to have as much or as little clutter around as you like.
