Living With Local Art: An Austin Summer Guide to Galleries, Gatherings and Giving Back
From the Etch Design Group team
The homes we love most are never blank slates. They are layered with pieces that mean something, and original art is almost always at the heart of that. Summer in Austin is a generous season for collectors, with new shows opening, designers gathering to compare notes, and easy ways to give back woven right in. Here is where we are headed over the coming weeks, and how each stop can shape the way you live with art at home.
Summer Sanctuary at Davis Gallery
If you are just beginning to collect, a group show is the friendliest place to start. Davis Gallery & Framing opens its annual Summer Sanctuary group show this weekend, a single room that lets you see many artists side by side and notice what genuinely pulls you in. That instinct, the piece you keep walking back to, is the truest guide to building a collection you will love for years.
Reception party: Saturday, June 20, 2026, 4 to 7 p.m.
On view: June 20 through July 18, 2026
Where: Davis Gallery & Framing, 837 W. 12th St., Austin, TX 78701
Gallery hours: Monday to Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Designer tip
Buy the piece, then build the room around it. A single work you feel strongly about can set the palette, the mood, and even the lighting plan for an entire space. Go to the reception, give yourself time to wander, and trust the work that makes you pause.
Hakeem Adewumi’s “Seeing Further” at the Carver Museum
For a deeper, slower experience, Texas artist Hakeem Adewumi’s solo exhibition “Seeing Further” is on view at the George Washington Carver Museum in Austin. Adewumi weaves photography, sculpture, sound and found objects, including branches, vines and weathered farming equipment gathered on his family’s generational land in East Texas, into an immersive reflection on emancipation, memory and freedom that reaches beyond Juneteenth.
“I create encounters that blur the boundaries between history and myth, the visible and the unseen.”Hakeem Adewumi, artist statement
On view: Through October 10, 2026
Where: George Washington Carver Museum, Austin
Why we are going
This show is a reminder that materials carry meaning. The way Adewumi pairs natural texture with personal history is exactly the layering we love to bring into a home, where the right combination of wood, stone, photography and family pieces can make a room feel rooted and entirely your own.
A Live “Trade Tales” Recording at Four Hands
Here is a fun one for our fellow designers next week. Business of Home is bringing its popular Trade Tales podcast to Austin for a live recording at the Four Hands Showroom, and it is completely free to attend. Editor in chief Kaitlin Petersen will be joined by three talented designers, Evan Millárd, Melissa Oholendt and Austin-based Audrey Scheck, for an honest conversation about building a stronger design business.
The panel will answer anonymously submitted questions from designers around the country and take questions from the audience, covering how to grow a design practice, price services and navigate the business side of the industry. If you have ever wanted practical, candid advice from experienced designers, this is the room to be in, and a wonderful chance to connect with peers and meet Kaitlin in person.
When: Wednesday, June 24, 2026, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Where: Four Hands Showroom, 2090 Woodward Street, Austin, TX
Cost: Free to attend
Register: fourhands.com/event-rsvp
Why we are going
A strong design business is what lets us keep doing thoughtful work for our clients. Conversations about pricing, process and growth are how the whole Austin design community gets better together, so we will be there with notebooks open.
Give Back: The Texas Advocacy Project Bag Drive
A note: this section touches on domestic abuse. We share it with care, because it is a meaningful way our community can help.
Through June 30, the Texas Advocacy Project is collecting new handbags, totes, diaper bags and backpacks for survivors of domestic abuse across Texas. Each donated bag carries a discreet tag printed with TAP’s confidential Legal Line, 800.374.HOPE, and a QR code linking to free legal and social services, then goes to shelters, clinics and crisis centers statewide. An everyday object becomes a quiet line to safety and support.
Donate through: June 30, 2026
What to give: A new handbag, tote, diaper bag or backpack at an official public drop-off location
Other ways to help: Volunteer to prepare bags, ship from outside Central Texas, or give a general donation. Details at the Texas Advocacy Project website.
A small idea
If you are refreshing a closet this summer, set aside a moment to add a new bag to the cart for someone who needs it. Beautiful spaces matter most when the people in our community feel safe and supported.
Where to Gather for the World Cup
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is underway and runs through July 19, so Austin is full of lively places to watch. A few of our favorites for a great group setting: Bouldin Acres on South Lamar, with its beer garden, lawn games and more than 20 TVs; the historic Tavern on West 12th, known since 1933 for cold beer and welcome air conditioning; and Casa VERDE at Inn Cahoots in East Austin, where Austin FC is showing every match for free through July 19 with daily programming and live music.
Designer tip
The best watch spots all do the same thing a good living room does: they give people room to gather, sightlines to what matters, and comfortable spots to land. When you plan a media or family room, start with the gathering, not the screen, and the design will follow.
Father’s Day Weekend Around Town
Father’s Day is Sunday, June 21, and the weekend is full of easy outings. A few worth a look: a laid-back vintage car show at Vista Brewing in Driftwood on Saturday, June 20, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., free with an RSVP; a hands-on cocktail master class at The Roosevelt Room on Sunday, June 21, from noon to 2:30 p.m.; and a yacht rock party at St. Elmo Brewing on Sunday, June 21, from 3 to 7 p.m.
A design note
The cocktail class is our kind of takeaway, because the best gifts often improve daily life at home. A well-styled bar cart or a thoughtfully designed corner for making drinks turns an ordinary evening into a small ritual worth repeating.
Bringing It Home
What ties this summer together is a simple idea we return to often: a home should feel like the people who live in it. Original art gives a space its voice, a strong community keeps our craft sharp, and small acts of generosity make the whole city feel more like home. Wander a gallery, sit in on a great conversation, gather your people for a match, and bring a piece or two of Austin back with you.
